A man who was remanded on March 28 until January 9 next year, is to face trial on charges of housebreaking and larceny and has been granted bail by the Supreme Court. He is 39-year-old labourer Derrick McLean, of Bloomfield Street, Mandeville, Manchester. Mrs. Justice Marjorie Cole-Smith granted him bail after hearing an application by attorney-at-law Ravil Golding, who was instructed by attorney-at-law Howard Lettman, who is representing McLean.
Trial date
McLean is to be tried in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate's Court on January 9 next year. The trial date was set after the complainant told Resident Magistrate Sonia Bertram Linton on March 28 that he would be off the island until January next year.
Attorney-at-law Howard Lettman made a bail application on April 4 on the grounds that McLean should be granted bail because it was not McLean's fault that an early trial date could not be set.
Application turned down
The RM turned down the application on the grounds that McLean was a flight risk and had previously answered to the name Cecil Samuels.
McLean is now on bail in the sum of $450,000 with sureties. Mrs. Justice Cole-Smith ordered him to report to the Mandeville Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. He is to surrender his travel documents and is not to be seen on the street between the hours of 9:00 p.m.and 6:00 a.m.
