Power failures highlight Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) shortfall
published: Friday | June 8, 2007

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) customers suffered power cuts across the island yesterday as the utility company struggled to make up for a shortfall in its generating capacity.

One of JPS's larger generators was out for planned maintenance, while other units, owned by the monopoly utility and its independent power producer (IPP) partners, also failed. JPS resorted to block-by-block load-shedding across the island to share the impact.

However, the load-shedding did cause significant disruption. Those travelling to work in Kingston from St. Catherine would have been inconvenienced with police at the busy Portia Simpson Square intersection having to direct traffic when the lights failed.

JPS's Director of Communications, Winsome Callum, told The Gleaner that the load-shedding finished at 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

"We are projecting, it is not a certainty, but based on what is happening currently, most of the problems should be gone tomorrow," said Ms. Callum.

JPS advised customers to monitor the radio for updates.
