Powell, Wariner in 200m showdown

NEW YORK, (CMC):

WORLD 100-METRES record holder Jamaican Asafa Powell is set to face off against current Olympic and World 400m champion Jeremy Wariner of the United States on June 10 in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

Instead of competing in his pet 100-metre event, the 24-year-old Powell will run in the 200m.Last year, Powell twice matched his own world record in the 100m of 9.77 seconds.

For his outstanding perfor-mance, he was named the Track & Field News and International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) Male Athlete of the Year.

Second-fastest

Wariner, 22, has run a world-leading 43.62 seconds for the 400m. Xavier Carter, who ran a world-leading 19.63 last year, for the 200m, the second-fastest of all-time, is also set for the Prefontaine Classic.

American Wallace Spearmon, who ran 19.65 seconds last year, the third-fastest of all-time, and Shawn Crawford, the current 200m Olympic champion, will also compete in the race.
