You would not use these prints for small cushions. They go well with larger ones. To maintain harmony and balance is to have an occurrence of unity, having all the parts to the room related by one idea.
Maintain balance in your rooms by creating harmony in your décor.
To do this, interior decorator Sharon Lowe notes that you should take into consideration the entire contents of the room, including walls and flooring.
You will use one theme to unify the whole, yet, you do not want to have the room appear monotonous. Introduce variety by using different styles and materials which are comparable.
Walls
Wall colours are important because the palette these provide will affect our moods. One of the most harmonious colour schemes is the monochrome. A deep colour is used on one wall while on the other three walls softer tones are used.
Once a hue is selected, for example, a bright yellow, one can then choose the tints and shades which are softer or lighter versions of this colour.
The idea is to use a range of tones from one colour. The monochromatic scheme is easy and harmonious, providing equilibrium in design.
Furnishings
The placement of furnishings is very important. You want to maintain some form of balance. One can have identical pieces, such as two side tables placed on either side of a sofa. This is considered formal balance you could have sofas and love seat arranged around a coffee table, giving what is called radial balance. These arrangements give a sense of equilibrium.
For your floors, a repeated pattern creates a sense of rhythm and, to maintain a flow of space, use the same flooring material throughout.
If, however, you change the flooring material between two adjacent rooms, use materials of the same colour to avoid an unwanted contrast which will disturb the décor's equilibrium.
Lighting
Well-balanced lighting is not just how much you have but how it is distributed in the room. Bear in mind the purpose of the room and then select the appropriate lighting for the mood you wish to create. Always provide enough light for a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere.
This is achieved by the three essential elements of general, task and accent lighting.
Window treatments
'Treatments' do not have to match but they must be colour coordinated. There must be repetition of fabric and colour. You can vary the colour intensity to your desire, and the same can be done with accessories such as wall décor, floral arrangements, mirrors, area rugs and accent pillows. These add another layer of charm and interest.
With the right accessories, furniture arrangement, colour and light, you will achieve an atmosphere of harmony and balance.
