Kerr-Jarrett has slick solution for gas-guzzling Jamaica
published: Wednesday | May 30, 2007

Mark Kerr-Jarrett

With Jamaica's oil bill and consumption continuing to rise, concerned businessman Mark Kerr-Jarrett has a proposal to save the country $3.3 billion each year.

All that needs to be done, writes the Montego Bay-based businessman (See 'Conserve today or tomorrow we pay' in News Section) , is to switch the majority of taxicabs to diesel-powered minibuses. This, he outlined, is based upon the simple economics of more persons travelling in fewer vehicles.

With the fear of crime on public transport and the comfort of travelling in personal, air-conditioned vehicles, many Jamaicans still prefer to drive alone, be it driving children to school or commuting to work. Carpooling, an informal arrangement to share transport with other commuters, remains relatively rare.

Read what Mr. Kerr-Jarrett has to say in news section and write to the editor with your feedback. What do you think? Email: editor@gleanerjm.com; or fax: 922-6223
