The Editor, Sir:
I am Jamaican by birth and I love my country very much. When I was living in Jamaica, I was in the JDF and I was proud to be a member serving my country. I loved the military so much, when I went to join, the pay wasn't a factor to me. It was a great pleasure to serve the people (my country) and treat them with respect from the privileged down to the homeless.
While I served in the army, I worked with the police (going on patrols) and I saw why the people sometimes resented them. I believe the whole police recruit training programme needs to be revised. There should be no reason why the people of a country are afraid of the police. They are killing too many of our young people on a daily basis and saying it was a shoot-out and they don't get any injuries.
The police aren't that good at shooting to be killing gunmen in running gun battles (I am talking from experience). When people think of the word POLICE, the first thing that comes to their minds is shooting because that is the first thing that comes to the police's minds. There are good police out there but the improperly trained ones outshadow the good ones.
Jamaican policemen, stop killing out the innocent young people of Jamaica and serve them with respect; that is the job at hand.
I am, etc.,
