The good, the bad and the ugly
published: Tuesday | May 29, 2007

The Cricket World Cup has come and gone. The seven-week tournament provided several persons and businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products to prospective buyers throughout the Caribbean.

The Bellina Collection, headed by Mauricio and Noella Costabeli, was one of 20 companies that collaborated with the Jamaica Business Development Centre (JBDC) during cricket's showpiece event.

Together, they produced a collection of craft ranging from photo frames to place mats and trinket boxes, dolls and other gift items.

According to the husband-and-wife team, the venture was successful due to the large order commissioned by the JBDC, as well as requests from major craft shops in the cricket areas.

The JamRock Sports Bar was not as lucky.

Local delights

Managementat the New Kingston spot spiced up its menu and drink list, while keeping its local delights. With expectations of a flood of tourists, JamRock was transformed into a league of nations, with flags of the different cricket nations and large-screen televisions dominating the venue.

According to Patrick Marshall, executive vice-president at the eatery, "It was disappointing, not what we expected at all."

A key driver in the lack of foreign patrons at JamRock was the closure of the One Love Jamaica Village at nearby Emancipation Park. The venue was closed by organisers one week after it opened.
