Manchester top round ravaged by rainfall
published: Monday | May 28, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Manchester were the only team that managed to come away with a positive result as they snatched first innings points from St. Elizabeth at Alpart in the heavily rain-affected fourth round of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Super Cup yesterday.

Resuming on 98for six which they made on the previous day's play, Manchester, led by David Powell's 31 runs, struggled to 114 all out. Christopher Dyer grabbed six wickets for 28 runs while Conroy Miller took three for 13.

However, in their reply, St. Elizabeth could only manage a meagre total of 99 all out, Vinord Woolcock top scoring with 21. Neive McNall did most of the damage with the ball for Manchester as he ended up with six for 38, while Andre Dwyer took three for 13. Manchester, batting a second time, were 80 for three when rain ended play. Elsewhere, the showers caused by the low pressure system continued to ravage play.

At Kensington: The home team added 33 more runs to their impressive 300 for three overnight before going on to declare. This after national youth player Rasheed Outar, who resumed on 77, went on to make 101 not out. In reply, Lucas got off to a solid start and were 73 without loss when persistent showers stopped play at a little past noon.

When play resumed, opening batsman Wayne, Gayle huffed and wheezed his way to 53 runs before being stumped by Kensington wicketkeeper Horace Miller off the bowling of Peter Colquhoun. Left at the crease with the score at 105-1, Kevin Hinds went on to make 51 runs, supported by Maurice Clarke who played some impressive strokes in a knock of 21. This pushed the score to 142 for three before rain ended play.

At Melbourne: St. Catherine Cricket Club, resuming on 113 for four, went on to make 292 for eight before the rains intervened. Junior Stewart top scored with 71, while Devon Brown made 57. Yannick Elliot picked up four for 60 for Melbourne, while spinner Marlon Samuels took two for 58.

At Up Park Camp: The Jamaica Defence Force1, resuming on 126 for three, went on to make 244 for nine declared. Bereston Reid top scored with 56, while Joseph Palmer added 44 and Warren Medwinter made 31. Oral Rankine was the pick of the Trelawny bowlers with four for 57, while Damion Johnson ended with four for 94.

In reply, Trelawny were 74-2 when rain ended the day's play.

AT ALLAN RAE OVAL: There was no play possible in the scheduled game between Westmoreland and Kingston Cricket Club due to a flooded outfield. Westmoreland had ended Saturday's play on 146 for three.
