Vaughan back for second Test - Bowlers Anderson, Sidebottom also called up

LONDON (AP):

ENGLAND CAPTAIN Michael Vaughan will return for the second Test against the West Indies, while bowlers James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom were also called into the squad yesterday.

Vaughan missed the first Test at Lord's, a rain-affected draw that finished on Monday, because of a broken finger and his return means Owais Shah is dropped.

He was named in a 13-man squad for the second Test at Headingley starting on Friday morning, along with all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who missed the first Test due to an ankle injury.

Reassess fitness

"Michael Vaughan came through his net session today without any adverse reaction, while Andrew Flintoff practiced earlier today but did not bowl as a precaution," England chairman of selectors David Graveney said.

"We will need to reassess Andrew's fitness over the next 48 hours, and our plan is for him to bowl in practice on consecutive days to see if there is any further reaction to his ankle injury."

With Matthew Hoggard out with a groin strain, England coach Peter Moores opted for Anderson, a pace bowler, and Sidebottom, who bowls left-arm fast-medium.

Hoggard was injured on Saturday, but Graveney said he was "optimistic" the fast bowler would return for the third Test at Old Trafford starting on June 7.

The 29-year-old Sidebottom has only played one Test for England - a win over Pakistan at Lord's in May 2001. He played two limited-overs matches for England in 2001.

Graveney said Anderson and Sidebottom add differing options to England's attack, with Jon Lewis and Stuart Broad both injured.

"Ryan has been a consistent performer for Nottinghamshire over the past two seasons, is familiar with the Headingley pitch through his time with Yorkshire, and deserves a further opportunity at this level," Graveney said.

Not selected

Anderson was drafted into England's squad for the Lord's Test the day before it started, but was not selected. He has played 16 Tests, taking 46 wickets at an average of 38.39, and last played Test cricket in the 5-0 Ashes series defeat in Australia.

The fourth and final Test against the West Indies is June 15-19 at Chester-le-Street in Durham.

England squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Andrew Flintoff, Stephen Harmison, Kevin Pietersen, Matthew Prior, Monty Panesar, Liam Plunkett, Ryan Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss.
