Abuse of workers
published: Wednesday | May 23, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

In relation to the article, 'No better no deh - Women in wholesales driven by desperation', it is a shamehow the PNP government has allowed both the Indians and the Chinese to come into Jamaica, set their own labour laws, employ Jamaican girls and treat them like slaves. They get no benefits, and are being abused both physically and verbally in their own country, while these 'businesspeople' get rich. I blame this on the PNP because they do not give a damn about the working people in Jamaica.

There is a Chinese wholesale in St. Ann. I went in there to buy some items. It was so hot; I asked the girls how could they work in that oven. I could not spend five minutes in the store. Whose responsibility is it to oversee the working conditions of our people? We have very limited resources and the Jamaican Government must stop issuing work permits at this time. We must put our people first. Jamaicans, at this time, must pool their resources and start their own businesses.

In all fairness, employers all over Jamaica abuse their employees. Many are working under fear and feel they do not have any labour rights.

I am, etc.,
