Nathaniel Stewart, Gleaner WriterMona's women's basketball team completely outplayed their St. Augustine counterparts to register a resounding 101-17 victory on Day 2 of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Games on Saturday night at the UWI, Mona, gymnasium.
Mona, led by Anna-Kay Morris, got off to a flying start, scoring five quick baskets before St. Augustine scored their first point. They continued to dominate and by the end of the first quarter they built up a sizeable 31-3 lead.
The dazed St. Augustine unit returned from the half-time break with thunderous applause from their supporters, but not even that could spur any significantly better performance as they mustered a mere four points, while conceding 18. In the final quarter, Mona scored 24 as St. Augustine had its best return - scoring eight, four of which were accounted for by Akeela Rodriques who had six points overall.
Mona's Morris led the scoring with 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, followed by former national netball captain and coach, Oberon Pitterson, who is also a member of the national basketball team. She scored 21 points, while Aduke Williams chipped in with 15.
The female competition continues tonight with Mona facing up to a challenge from its Barbadian counterparts from the UWI Cave Hill campus.
Meanwhile, in field hockey competition yesterday, Mona scored a double as their women's team, through Sheshona Smith's goal, clipped St. Augustine 1-0 in their morning encounter, and their men's team followed up with a 3-2 win over the Cave Hill team.
