Fyfffes Pen top Chris Tufton league
published: Saturday | May 19, 2007

A 38th strike by Lincoln Leon was enough to secure victory for Fyffes Pen over Greenfield in the finals of the 2007 Chris Tufton Football League.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances in the game which had end to end action, thrilling the 600 spectators at the Newtown Sports Complex in Black River. Fyffes Pen were reduced to 10 in the 20th minute when Collin Anderson made an illegal challenge against Devon Ward and was given marching orders.

Despite that, Fyffes Pen were able to take the initiative seven minutes from half time when Garnett Smith made a pass from half- line, up the centre of the pitch to an unmarked Leon, who turned and hit a firm shot beyond the grasp of goalkeeper Leon Simms.

Greenfield got a glorious opportunity to equalise in the second half when they earned a penalty, but the team's captain, Steve Marrett, failed to convert.

The Chris Tufton Football League is in its second year and with 38 teams from as many communities participating, it is now being hailed as the biggest sporting competition ever held in southwest St. Elizabeth.

The sponsorship of the Chris Tufton Football League was approximately $650,000 and the top eight teams received complete team outfits designed to their request. For their effort, champions Fyffes Pen earned a first-place cash award of $50,000, plus the Chris Tufton Football League Trophy, while Greenfield received $20,000 and medals for filling the runners-up slot.

Middle Quarters, which defeated last year's finalist Lewistown 2-1 for third place, were awarded $10,000 and medals.

Prizes were also given to the coach of the winning team, Kerith Reynolds, the leading goal scorer, Dwayne Smith and the Most Valuable Player of the finals, Dameion Leon.

The Chris Tufton Football League was designed to develop discipline and talent in southwest St. Elizabeth, as well as to foster better community relationships.
