'Memorial' looks a real Passa Passa
published: Saturday | May 19, 2007

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

PASSA PASSA, who has been knocking at the door in recent races, gets a glorious opportunity to deliver at CaymanasPark today when he opposes four opponents in the three-year-old and up overnight allowance race for the Frankie Frazer Memorial Cup over 1300 metres.

Meanwhile, Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) will offer betting on the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the American Triple Crown, to be simulcast from Pimlico at approximately 5:09 p.m. local time today.

Of the five declared for the Frankie Frazer Memorial, only RAJPUT (lacks the class) can be safely ruled out.

However, it could be close among the quartet of PASSA PASSA, JACK SPARROW, ROYAL COMMAND and the much improved grey filly WHITE DIAMOND, who is coming off a recent course win.

To again be ridden by five-time champion Trevor Simpson for 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny, WHITE DIAMOND won by 1-1/2 lengths from subsequent winner, QUEEN OF MY HEART, in the good time of 1:19.4 in restricted company (non-winners of four), an up to overnight allowance today, this will not deter her.

WHITE DIAMOND continues to look the part at exercise and coming from an in-form stable, should make a brave bid from the convenient mark of 51.0kg. She has a good, strong early pace and will be bang in contention when this is being decided.

The Richard Azan-trained ROYAL COMMAND is undoubtedly the most accomplished in the field an winless since April of last year, could rebound at any time.

Rowan Mathie's JACK SPARROW that was narrowly beaten by CLASSY BOY PETE over 1700 metres on April 21, will not find the trip too sharp and his final rattle could take him close.

the right choice

Despite the good claims of the above, PASSA PASSA looks the right choice.

From the stables of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, the American-bred five-year-old gelding has finished close up in his two most recent races, firstly on April 7 when caught on the line by the vastly improved TOBAGO over 1500 metres.

Installed as an odds-on favourite next time out, PASSA PASSA was again beaten over 1500 metres, finishing a close third to fast-finishing PECKUS OUT after entering the last furlong a clear leader.

PASSA PASSA led in fast splits of 46.2 and 1:11.4 for the first six furlongs that day. Back in action with less weight (52.5kg), the son of A.P. Jet should set off in front and make every post a winning one. Dane Nelson, back from suspension, has the ride.

Other firm fancies on the card are SIR KISSON LAL to stave off SIR CHACHA BABA in the fourth race, IM D'MAC ahead of RUMOUR HAS IT in the fifth, SPLASHIN RIVER in the seventh for apprentice riders and MR. WICKER ahead of RUSH TO VICTORY in the eighth.
