200 vie in amateur series titles
published: Friday | May 11, 2007

THE ISLAND'S top amateurs will battle to dominate the local tennis arena when the Llocket McGregor Tennis Series serves off with the Mercedes Benz Amateur Tennis Classic tomorrow at the Liguanea Club courts.

The series, which takes over from the Trafalgar Travel amateur series, is expected to have at least four tournaments and will see players awarded points based on how far into the individual tournaments they advance. An overall point tally is then done to determine each category winner.

In the men's Class One category, top-seeded Dane Vernon will have his work cut out if he is to retain his title. Hot on his heels will be former champion Dwayne Pagon, who is currently seeded at three and won the first two series.

While yet to lift a title in the series, number two seed Yusuf Migoko and fourth seed Kristopher Martin have been in the running in the past couple of tournaments and will be legitimate contenders.

In men's Class Two category, Howard Powell is the man to beat. However, he will constantly be looking over his shoulders as number two and three seeds Allie McNab and CarlBlissett will have points to prove.

In men's Class Three, Richard Harris is the man out front. However, once again he is expected to be challenged by Terrence Forrester and Leopold Fungsang. Andrez Coy is the top seed in the men's Class Four category, with former champion Nelton Forsythe at number two while Warrenton Dixon holds the third spot.

In the women's category, defending champion Sasha Hanna is expected to continue dominating proceedings as her closest rival Danielle Montieth is not expected to take part in the series.

Close to 200 players are expected to take part in this week's Mercedes Benz tournament.
