Another Meadhaven, Tivoli face-off
published: Friday | May 11, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Meadhaven United will once again face off against Tivoli Gardens, this time in the Supligen/KSAFA Under-20 League final, following semi-final wins over Waterhouse and Bull Bay at the Barbican field on Wednesday.

The final, which will take place at the same venue tomorrow, is a rematch of the Supligen/KSAFA Under-20 Knockout Cup final which saw Meadhaven come away 3-2 winners.

"They beat us in the knockout final, but I've made some adjustments and we are the only unbeaten team left in the league competition," said Tivoli coach Christopher Burnett in anticipation of the rematch. "It's going to be hard against the defending champions, but I think we are going to be able to pull it off this time around."

On Wednesday, the west Kingston team came out of the semi-final 2-0 winners.

They took charge of things when striker Kemar Flemming fired them into the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute.

Earlier, Bull Bay's Stephen Squire had deliberately handled a powerful blast to goal from Shavar Johnson, giving referee Clint Reid no option but to send him to an early shower after pointing to the spot.

Despite going down to 10-men, Bull Bay battled on bravely and nearly found themselves level on a couple of occasions.

Anthony Hanson had the best chance when he eluded the backline and sprinted towards goal in the 43rd minute, but Tivoli custodian Jason Samuels displayed excellent goal-tending skills as he sprawled full stretch to deny Hanson a shot to goal.

Forced to chase for the rest of the encounter, Bull Bay were dealt a lethal blow in the 86th minute when substitute Michael Spence broke free on the counter attack and held his nerve to chip from close range over advancing Bull Bay 'keeper Michael Campbell.

Indiscipline

Bull Bay coach Owen Wright believed his team's indiscipline cost it the game.

"To be honest, we just weren't discipline today and we didn't play together," he said. "It is a disappointing loss, we weren't focused for a game like this. You have to give 100 per cent and that wasn't there today,"

Title holders Meadhaven had far less difficulties in their game against Waterhouse as they came away 5-1 winners.

Norman Bailey got them off to a solid start with a brace in the 11th and 31st minutes and on the stroke of half-time, Keammar Daley effectively put the game out of reach of Waterhouse when he snuck into the area to toe-poke past custodian Geovanni Smith.

Burly central midfielder Shane Bygrave threw the Drewsland team a glimmer of hope when he fired from close range in the 56th minute.

However, substitute Kemal Malcolm slammed the door shut with a goal in the 62nd minute and then added insult to injury when he netted again in the 88th.
