Road safety priority
published: Thursday | May 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am calling on the Government to repair the south coast road to enable long, heavily laden trucks to travel on a road that does not have steep hills like the Spur Tree, to get to the south coast.

As we saw another horrific accident claimed three more lives. We now have to take bold steps to protect the travelling public. It is insane that these oversized, heavy trucks should be allowed to travel on a road that is clearly not built for them.

Too many of these accidents are caused by huge overladen trucks that run away down the steep hill, out of control, causing death and destruction.

It is not enough to say that drivers must be careful. The authorities must now insist that safety becomes the prime object and act accordingly.

My sympathies go out to all those families who lost loved ones in the accident.

I am, etc.,

SALLY PORTEOUS

Deputy Mayor of Mandeville
