Maintaining party discipline
published: Thursday | May 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate Joan Gordon-Webley needs to be careful that she doesn't weaken and/or destroy the image that her party has worked so hard to rebuild and sustain over the past four and a half years. Due to some of her public utterings since re-entering active politics, one gets the distinct impression that Gordon-Webley is a 'loose cannon'.

Another indication of her rebellious style is that after JLP secretary Karl Samuda publicly apologised on behalf of the JLP for Gordon-Webley's "Jezebel" comment, she lashed out against the apology saying that she had nothing to apologise for.

The JLP executive council must insist that Gordon-Webley control her public behaviour and utterings, failing which, strong disciplinary actions should be invoked against her. This must be done publicly to show that the Labour party is serious about maintaining its strength and unity.

Moreover, any up and coming political candidate or MP, from either the JLP or People's National Party, whose private or public utterings and/or behaviour is representative of the old style dirty politics, should be swiftly and strongly disciplined by his or her party.

I am, etc.,
