Night call to 119, but the cops stayed away
published: Thursday | May 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I was vacationing in Jamaica during the month of April. On Easter Sunday there was a strange man outside of my apartment at the Oxford Manor in New Kingston. He knocked at the door at 1:20 a.m., and I awoke from my sleep. He tried the door knob and I asked "who is it?" He asked for Miss Smith.

I told this stranger there was no Miss Smith in my unit. He refused to leave. I picked up my cellphone and dialled 119. There was no answer.

The stranger proceeded to the backyard. At that point I started to be afraid. I found the telephone number for the Half-Way Tree Police Station and called. I was told to contact the New Kingston station, which I did. A female officer answered the telephone, apparently roused from sleep. I explained the situation, indicating that I felt that myself and my children were threatened. I was assured that a police unit would be dispatched right away.

Waiting for police

Well, I am still awaiting the arrival of that unit. I turned on all of the lights and pretended as if I was on the telephone with someone and they were on their way over. Thank God, we made it through the night without being added to the homicide list in Jamaica.

On Monday morning, I contacted the New Kingston police and spoke to Sergeant Panther. I told him that I was not thrilled with their level of service. He told me there was no mention of the incident and he would speak to the officer who was on duty and give me some feedback the following day. Well, I am also still awaiting his feedback. I would never recommend Jamaica to any of my friends because safety should be a major concern. I am totally disappointed with the New Kingston police.

I am, etc.,
