Veterinarian surgeon, Dr. Michael Whittingham (left), demonstrates to Bilcleaver Lewis, a beneficiary of the revolving goat project, how to properly care for the livestock at the Thicketts Basic School, St. Ann, at the launch of the project recently. - Contributed Over 60 farmers from Discovery Bay and surrounding communities in St. Ann are expected to benefit from a goat rearing/breed improvement project launched recently by St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners.
The main objective of the project is to improve the local goat stock in these areas by introducing new breeds and appropriate animal husbandry practices.
It is widely believed that goat farmers in the parish have not been receiving maximum benefits from breeding and selling the livestock due to in-breeding and a general decline in goat husbandry practices.
Three farmers in the Thicketts, Discovery Bay and Red Valley communities will start with the first three hybrid Boer rams and will operate breeding stations for the communities.
It is projected that 35 to 40 districts will benefit from this revolving scheme.
With the execution of the goat project, it is expected that consumers will have access to better quality meat; farmers will see improved financial returns and goat rearing will re-emerge as a viable income generator.
Noted veterinarian, Dr. Michael Whittingham, has consented to give free veterinary services to the project.
