The hottest topics on the cocktail circuit
published: Thursday | May 10, 2007

1. People really don't mind the mixing of the classes that occurs at some political functions, it's the behaviour of the underclass that most find disturbing. Imagine some of those guests approaching the bars and ordering, and when the bartender turns away to compose the order, they start grabbing anything they can lay their hands on and then stuffing them into their handbags! And, if that was not enough, others were quite busy piling food on to napkins!

2. Is it a case of a woman scorned? That is the question those closest to the situation are asking as they can't seem to understand the bitterness and vitriol dished out in the recent custody battle by the ex-wife.

3. Some US$42 million for the New Kingston property; another US$82 million was shelled out for another outside the capital; a chain of nightclubs is also in the mix; a set of high-end condominiums; plus a number of other high-profile acquisitions, had a number of observers watching to see just how long it would be before one or the other of the political parties would go looking for funding? Well, a delegation paid a courtesy call over the weekend.

4. It won't be the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker, as the banker is the favoured candidate, over and above the wife of the genetically connected one who engineered the palace coup that saw a premature 'retirement', much to the chagrin of the political hierarchy. Meanwhile, the dethroned one is said to be reconsidering the announced retirement for another rural seat, but that too might not work out as there is talk about talking the existing candidate out of his retirement to help see the party home. He, in turn, would serve for a short time then go off in retirement with a diplomatic posting. Meanwhile, changes are also being considered for the east!

5. There's a lot of talk about rearranging the officer corp in the party, as it seems that one of its current members is slated to be voted out of that slot. This talk has been around for some time now, however, but the argument being advanced for not moving on it sooner was the fact that the party wants to go into the next general elections as a united team.

6. With the former right-hand man of the powerhouse apparently joining forces with the new kid on the block, is it a question of a strategic endorsement of a venture, despite all the official talk of it being too risky?

7. Sources are adamant that the recent senior resignation has more to do with what some are calling the 'falling-out' with a companion, who incidentally, is a member of the security forces.

The security person is said to have moved on to another suitor.

8. They are a very high-profile couple, fond of playing host to the well-to-do, but because they have not hosted any in awhile there is much talk that all is not well and there's much talk of divorce. This is not new, however, as this talk has been circulating for sometime now, but according to some close to the family, the sticking point is the potential settlement! Depends on whom you listen to, it could be a multimillion-dollar settlement, or it could be nothing more that a townhouse and a stipend as all is held in an airtight trust fund.

9. Unless settled soon, there could be another stickler coming as there is fresh talk by yet another female employee of the aggressive and much unwanted advances being heaped upon her by the head of the organisation. Early retirement is being considered.

As for the wife, she remains quite happily married!

10. Do the math - 33 per cent for the JLP and 33 per cent for the PNP represents a virtual and statistical dead-heat, not a runaway for anyone, so get someone numerate to reflect the content!
