Education for transformation
published: Tuesday | May 8, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

In response to your editorial today (Thursday, May 3, "Another crusade for guns"), allow me to share a quotation from a renowned spiritual teacher, Sai Baba.

He states that "unless knowledge is transformed into wisdom, and wisdom is expressed in character, education is a wasteful process. If education confers this gift of transformation, then surely life will become peaceful, happy and full of mutual help and cooperation. But the aim ofeducation today has degenerated into the acquisition of certain skills and intellectual tricks. It provides the educated with food, clothing and shelter and considers that its task is over with that achievement."

Education transforms

Therefore, concurrently with the Government's desire to decontaminate the society of evil tools, it ought to introduce a sustainable programme to integrate the teaching of human values in the school curriculum, so that the future stream of adults will be filled with high character - the most reliable foundation for restoring peace and harmony to our society. Otherwise, they might be using the proverbial basket to carry water!

I am, etc.,
