Today is being observed as Read Across Jamaica Day and the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) is appealing to parents and other members of the society to read a book to a child. This effort, the JTA said, is to develop in children a love for reading.
"The Read Across Jamaica initiative is an important step in encouraging children to make reading a regular part of their lives," said the JTA.
According to the JTA, the country's education system faces a challenge.
"The proportion of children entering the primary school system without the necessary skills to begin primary education and the literacy rate at the end of grade six are a cause for concern," the JTA said.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Education and JTA president, Hopeton Henry are among Jamaicans who will visit schools and read to children today.
Why is it important to promote literacy?
Literacy is essential to a child's development. It is the gateway to knowledge and opens the possibilities for future success in school and the world of work in an increasingly competitive society.
A child who reads well will be self-confident, and will set high expectations for life.
Research shows that children who read are more creative and perform better in school.
