Western Bureau:

Granville FC joined Montpelier in the final of the 2007 Captain's Bakery Western Super Football League on Saturday when they clipped Sandy Bay 1-0 in their second-leg semi-final game at Rusea's High School in Hanover.

By virtue of the win, the exciting Granville team, which got their goal from striker David Gilliard, advance to the final 4-0 on aggregate, having won their first-leg meeting 3-0 at the Catherine Hall Stadium the previous week.

"It was not vintage Granville today as the players did not want to extend themselves," said Granville's coach Tracy Reid, who guided the team to the two end-of-round titles.

She added: "Our aim is towin the final and move into the National Premier League (NPL) elimination tournament."

Montpelier got their slot in the final on Friday afternoon when they clipped outgoing champions Negril FC 1-0 in their second-leg semi-final to advance 1-0 on aggregate. The teams had battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the first-leg game.

NO MERCY

In Saturday's match Granville, which showed Sandy Bay no mercy when they blanked them 3-0 in their first-leg game, were somewhat subdued and showed no real interest to improve on their first-leg score.

However, the Sandy Bay team gave a spirited performance and at times looked like upstaging Granville. They should have taken the lead in the ninth minute when Roy Gilchrist got behind the Granville defence, but his cracking shot flew wide of the goal.

Sandy Bay squandered another chance in the 14th minute when Howard Cunningham pounced on a looping cross before the goal but directed his header wide of goalkeeper Loxley Reid.

Granville missed two good chances in the 30th and 42nd minutes. First, Oniel Sterling got behind the defence but struck his shot wide and second, Jermaine Anderson got away before the goal but struck the upright with his shot. The half ended 0-0.

In the second half, Granville stepped up the pace and just missed taking the lead in the 56th minute. Damion Reid pounced on a rebound but unbelievably booted wide with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

Granville again missed back-to-back chances in the 30th and 34th minutes.

First, Oniel Pringle fired straight at the goalkeeper after breaking free before the goal and second, Gilliard fired inches wide from close range.

Gilliard made up for his miss on the stroke of full time when he won possession in a goalmouth mêlée and slotted in easily, making the final score 1-0.
