USA top qualifiers
published: Monday | May 7, 2007

The United States finished the FIFA Under-17 CONCACAF Final Round Group B on top, qualifying when they beat Costa Rica 2-1 at the National Stadium last night.

The United States finished with nine points from three wins, ahead of Costa Rica who finished on seven points. Having already qualified for their 13th consecutive Youth World Cup, the Stars and Stripes seemed hungry to prove a point following a disappointing 3-2 loss to Jamaica on Friday.

Gregory Gaza got the United States off to a fast start when he snuck in at the back post to fire a shot past Costa Rica custodian Leonel Moreira for a 13th minute lead, benefitting from William Schuler low, curling cross.

Confident and dominant in possession, the United States went further ahead when an unmarked Ellis McLoughlin, left with too much time in the area from a corner, poked the ball past a stranded Moreira.

Second half

The second half would, however, be an entirely different affair and the Ticos, also having already booked their spot, came out playing for pride. First-half substitute Marcos Urena held his nerve under pressure before lobbing into the back of the net.

Inspired by the goal, the Costa Ricans continued to attack relentlessly but resolute defending by the U.S.A. ensured that the score stayed just the way it was.

"We got the early goals but we trailed off a little towards the end of the half. We had a half-time talk and I think we played well in the second half," assessed U.S. coach John Hackworth.

"They got a goal totally against the run of play but full credit to the Costa Ricans, they are a solid team and theyshould do well in the World Cup. It was a nailbiter to the end but obviously a fantastic result for us."
