Staff at Garvey Maceo mourns colleague's death
published: Friday | May 4, 2007

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

Ancillary staff at the Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon broke down in tears yesterday morning after learning about the death of one of their colleagues whose body was fished from the Kingston Harbour by the Marine Police on Wednesday.

"It is a gloomy day for all of us at Garvey Maceo," vice-principal, Volda Gayle, told The Gleaner yesterday.

The deceased, who has been identified as 65-year-old Fitzroy McLean, was the maintenance supervisor at the school.

According to the teachers, he had been working at the educational facility since 1994.

Feeling depressed

"He was a devoted Christian and a jack of all trades. This is somebody who would go the extra mile to do a favour for you," commented Miss Gayle.

Reports are that the deceased had complained to relatives last week that he felt depressed. He was taken to Kingston where he went to a doctor.

According to the police, he was staying at a residence in Harbour View when he went missing on Monday. An on-the-spot post-mortem revealed that he died by drowning.

Offering support

The Garvey Maceo vice-principal said that at no time at all did Mr. McLean show any signs that he was ill.

"I did not know that he had gone to Kingston. Mr. McLean was in charge of our plumbing system," Miss Gayle disclosed.

She said the school community would be offering whatever support it can to McLean's family.

He had been working at the educational facility since 1994.
