LETTER OF THE DAY - Public Defender correct in advice to gays
published: Tuesday | May 1, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The Public Defender, Mr. Witter, is absolutely correct in advising the homosexual community to "hold their corners". Jamaicans from all walks of life should, by way of the print or electronic media, show their generous support for Mr. Witter in this matter. And I believe this support would be overwhelming.

Some time ago, I believe, the Reverend Blair had advised women similarly in respect of how their dressing contributes to the incidence of rape. The response from the feminists was nothing short of outrage. They ranted and raved about how they have a right to dress in whatever they choose without being violated. They may have been right about this. But their actions regarding other assets, not nearly as precious as their bodies, show an arrant and conspicuous inconsistency.

They wind up the windows of their cars and lock the doors even when those cars are parked on private property. Certainly, I believe, they consider their bodies more valuable than used cars. They will not walk in the rain, for fear it might ruin their hairdos. Again, their bodies must be more valuable than hairdos.

My point, ladies, is that you know that there are rapists in our society. This knowledge ought to cause you to dress as though you are aware of this fact. You do not leave your handbags locked up in your cars. Nor do you leave other valuable items such as cameras and cellphones locked up in your cars. You would be totally in your rights ifyou did. But you will not. Why? Because everybody, including yourself, would consider that a silly thing to do. Yet, you'd have a right to do it, for in a free country you have a right to do what you please with your property. You, however, do not leave your doors and windows open because you feel that would invite the thieves in.

Dress appropriately women

I believe, ladies, that the prudent thing to do is to dress appropriately to make yourselves less accessible to rapists. As soon as homosexuals get this concept, they will find that Jamaica, after all, is not such an unhealthy environment. For in 'holding their corners' it is less likely that their revolting lifestyle will be discovered. Their failure to heed Mr. Witter's wonderful words of wisdom will impact very negatively on their health. His view concerning how they should behave in our society is impatient of debate.

I am, etc.,
