Children's activists are imploring parents and adults this Child Month, which commences today, to be more caring and vigilant towards the younger generation.
Statistics regarding crime and violence against children since the start of the year are a cause for concern, says Betty-Ann Blaine of Hear The Children Cry.
Eight children were killed in March, while there were 22 recorded cases of carnal abuse in the same month. In addition, at least five children have been burnt to death in fires since January.
"I am calling on Jamaicans to be a mentor, to simply look out for a child. This month is an opportunity for Jamaicans to say "can I help one child?" Ms. Blaine said.
Mary Clarke, Children's Advocate, has urged the nation to remember the safety of children during the upcoming general election.
