After more than three preliminary enquiry dates, the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court is yet to begin hearing evidencein the manslaughter case against 21-year-old Raine Russell.
Russell is charged in connection with the May 2005 death of Gleaner Company truck driver, 63-year-old Cedric Evangelist, in Montego Bay.
When he appeared in court on Monday, one witness, the investigating officer, and a vehicle inspector were present.
However, the enquiry did not get under way as it was not convenient for defence attorney George Thomas.
Matter was adjourned
The matter was adjourned until May 29. Russell's $860,000 bail bond was extended pending his next court appearance.
RM Winsome Henry stated that the preliminary enquiry will start on the next date, regardless of the number of witnesses, as the matter has been outstanding for too long.
Russell, who is the son of former national tennis champion Richard Russell, was slapped with manslaughter charges after his Pajero sports utility vehicle collided with a Gleaner Company truck, being driven by Mr. Evangelist.
Allegations are that on May 22, 2005, the deceased was driving from Kingston to Montego Bay to deliver newspapers. It is said that on reaching the Coral Gardens Police Station, Russell, who was travelling in the opposite direction, allegedly swerved to the right side, and collided with the truck.
The truck overturned and Mr. Evangelist died on the spot.
Russell, who sustained injuries in the crash, was taken to the MoBay Hope Medical facility before being airlifted to an overseas hospital. He was subsequently arrested on his return to the island.
