MAY PEN, Clarendon:

One man has been held by the police and is scheduled to be questioned this morning in relation to yesterday's daring daylight robbery along the busy Manchester Avenue in May Pen, Clarendon, which left three men, including two security guards, dead. Some $2 million was reportedly taken by the robbers. Up to press time last night, the police were still searching for a group of gunmen implicated in the incident.

Those killed are Lenford Levy, 41, of Hayes district, Clarendon; Carl Goodwin, 37, of May Pen and 30-year-old Albert Swinton of Simon district also in May Pen, Clarendon. A fourth person who was shot and injured remains in hospital in critical condition.

Vehicle intercepted

According to reports reaching The Gleaner, about 9:00 a.m. yesterday, security guards were making a delivery of cash to a nearby cambio when the Toyota Rav4 sports utility vehicle in which they were travelling was intercepted by a Toyota Corolla motor car. Occupants of the car alighted, brandished guns and fired shots on the occupants of the Rav4, killing the two guards and injuring two bystanders, one fatally.

The robbers then made off with an estimated $2 million in cash. The police who were quick on their trail, located the car the criminals were driving along the road, near Curato Hill, about three miles fromthe scene.

The car had pieces of board and other materials which suggest the men were trying to burn the vehicle from the inside. In the meanwhile, several business interests in the town have expressed concerns about the frequency with which criminal elements wreak havoc on the businesses in the area.

Head of the Clarendon Police Division, Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, said the police will be continuing their efforts to rid the parish of criminal elements.
