Rush for second, golden boot
published: Wednesday | April 25, 2007

Waterhouse's Irvino English is the league's leading scorer with 16 goals.

The accumulation of more points to secure second and the other Caribbean Club Championship spot, and rush for the leading goalscorer's title - the golden boot - will be high on the agenda as the Wray and Nephew National Premier League goes into its penultimate set of matches today.

The higher the teams finish, the greater the share of the sponsorship jackpot they will secure and the top two will earn a place in the Caribbean Club Championships.

Already, Harbour View have earned the major share, having secured the title, while Naggo Head and Wadadah have locked up the bottom two positions and will be relegated.

Second-placed Portmore United, the team to break Boys' Town's unbeaten record at home, will be aiming to record one more victory as they seek to maintain some distance between themselves and third-placed Reno, who are a mere two points adrift.

A win will see Portmore United holding on to their position, while a draw could see Reno pull alongside them, providing they are able to dispose of Village United at Elliston Wakeland Centre.

While Boys' Town are not a team to be taken lightly anywhere, they are especially dangerous at home. Portmore United, on the other hand, have a very deep team which could topple any if they report in the mood on the day.

Following their 5-1 thumping of Naggo Head on Sunday, Reno football club could have cultivated the appetite for another goal feast. One man who could be especially keen to find the back of the net is contender for the leading scorer title and former Village United representative, Ricardo Scott, who has 13 goals. Big forward Newton Sterling will be Village's main threat.

Surprise

Following their 2-3 loss to Arnett Gardens on Sunday, Seba United will be aiming to go one better today when they host Tivoli Gardens at Catherine Hall. On form and paper, the Montego Bay team are not expected to be a match for their rivals from the other city. If, however, the play of the veteran Theodore Whitmore - who scored twice on Sunday - can inspire his younger colleagues, then they could surprise.

Fabian Davis, Lenworth Hyde Jr., Kasai Hinds, Christopher Jackson and company will have their own designs on the game.

At Ferdie Neita Park, Arnett Gardens should be fancied to get the better of the relegated Naggo Head. This will be a reality if the likes of Sunday's hat-trick hero, Kwame Richardson, and Leon Strickland (11 goals) are able to find the back of the net.

Naggo Head are a proud team and could want to give their fans a famous victory to hold on to as they sign off from the country's top flight football.

Best team in the land

After the thumping they received on Sunday from Waterhouse, even more of the Wadadah players could find themselves not in the mood to travel especially with their league fate already decided and the fact that they are facing the best team in the land.

Such a situation could present target practice for Kavin Bryan (14 goals) and Fabian Taylor (12), two players with an eye on the leading scorer's prize.

On the basis of Sunday's 9-2 thumping of Wadadah, Water-house appear to have rediscovered the desire to win but will find the promoted August Town a much more difficult team to break down.

Even before Waterhouse's melt-down, August Town were difficult to beat. With the confidence of a number of key victories under their belt, that situation could be even tougher for last year's winning team from Drewsland.

With that being the case, I would not bet on another five-goal performance from club stalwart Irvino English, who sits atop the scoring charts with 16 goals.
