Only eight races are scheduled forCaymanas Park today, the programme featuring race No. 4 in the CTL Claiming series ($200,000 and less) over 1400 metres to be contested by 11 starters.
This popular series, which will be run in two phases of six races each, is proving highly competitive and today's race is no exception, with no fewer than five of the starters having good claims.
The main hopefuls are THE MINISTER, ARCHANGEL, ME LLAMO, SIR KNIGHT and DON DON. The winner is almost certain to come from this quartet, even though it is not beyond others such as MEDIC ON BOARD and SIXTH SENSE to enter the reckoning on their best form.
Suspect
Speed is represented by RISING MOON, who will undoubtedly set off in front in a bid to make all. However, this grey gelding is suspect over the distance and is not expected to stave off the challenges up the lane.
The 4-y-o gelding DON DON should come in for good support in a race of this nature and if able to reproduce his eye-catching fifth to CHANEL over 1500 metres on March 17, when beaten four lengths, can take home this trophy from the covenient mark of 52.0kg and top apprentice Javour Simpson aboard.
Five-time champion jockey Trevor Simpson is aboard a live contender in SIR KNIGHT, who was a runaway winner over 1800 metres on March 28, this on a $160,000 tag.
When last raced on a $210,000 claiming tag on April 7, the 6-y-o gelding finished second to out-of-class SOY MUJER over 1700 metres, but was subsequently disqualified after being involved in a bumping match up the straight with ME LLAMO, who renews rivalry today.
Both are expected to run well, but the Richie Todd-trained ME LLAMO under bang-in-form Richie Mitchell, has brighter prospects in a race of this nature, and along with stable companion ARCHANGEL, should go close.
Still, the one best equipped to take home this trophy must be THE MINISTER, who though not the force of yesteryear when successfully campaigning in open allowance company, showed enough in his recent race to rebound with an overdue win.
The seven-year-old horse from the stables of Robert A. Taylor proved competitive on April 7 when finishing 7-1/2 lengths fourth in the race won by SOY MUJER. He actually turned for home the leader by a length before giving way to SOY MUJER approaching the distance, weakening into fourth, just behind SIR KNIGHT and ME LLAMO.
Fitter
Now that much fitter and with the distance reduced, THE MINISTER, with smart apprentice Carlton Malcolm riding him from the lenient mark of 49.0kg, has a glorious chance to win a race for the first time in many moons. He is preferred to ME LLAMO and DON DON.
Other firm fancies on the card are YOSHI to make all in the second race over the straight, LAWS OF LUVVE in the fifth, SIR KISSON LAL in the sixth and RUSH TO VICTORY in the eighth and final.
