Parents to be blamed
published: Tuesday | April 3, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Disturbing news of student-centred upheavals at the Kingston Technical High School, as well as at other schools, has impelled me to share publicly my age-old conviction that the intolerable scourge of crime, violence and indiscipline being experienced in Jamaica is due largely to irresponsible parenting.

Blame is ascribed to poverty, to teachers and schools, but there appears to be reluctance to acknowledge the root cause of the problem and to place responsibility where it properly lies - parents and homes.

Young people are unable to distinguish right from wrong - Anything goes! Let us face this condition squarely and tackle it resolutely in an organised, yet compassionate manner. By saving our children, eventually we will save Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

MINNA McLEOD

Kingston 6
