Remove 'red monies'?
published: Tuesday | April 3, 2007

The EDITOR, Sir:

Mr. Editor, allow me some space in your most noble newspaper to comment about the dying value of our local currency 'the red monies'.

I am concerned that irrespective of the establishment at which I may conduct business, tendering cash of course, my change does not include anything less than a one dollar coin.

Just today, I made a purchase at a particular pharmacy - my bill was $149.77 including tax and a $500 note was used to pay. The cashier gave me $350 change, totally ignoring the fact that I should have got 23 cents more.

Now tell me, if your currencyis not working in tandem with what we were taught in school (simple maths), then what is the purpose of the education system?

Please Mr. Editor, I need to know is 'small change' obsolete, or is this the proliferation of already deteriorating values of a people? Should the Bank of Jamaica now remove from its cadre of legal tender the 'red monies?'

I am, etc.,

LISA THOMPSON
