Massive vibes at Colonel's Cove
published: Tuesday | April 3, 2007

The fun and games were not only in the audiences, but those on-stage enjoyed their fair share at Supreme Ventures Jamaica Carnival, St Thomas Blowout, held at Colonel's Cove, St. Thomas, last Friday. - photos by Nathaniel Stewart/Freelance Photographer

Oscar B, Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires' frontman, said the St. Thomas leg of the Supreme Ventures Jamaica Carnival at Colonel's Cove had been the best yet.

Friday's blowout had the intensity and turnout to make it more than a full night of Soca wining, gyrating and just sheer fun and excitement.

After the band delivered an energy-filled set on-stage, it was time for more excitement as The STAR's Tiny Winey competition was announced at 12:45 a.m.

Four female contestants took the stage, as they sought to win $10,000 and a chance to represent St. Thomas in the grand event finals at the Richmond Estate (formerly held at Chukka Cove).

Instructed contestants

Oscar B then instructed the contestants, "You can do anything you want to do," as they wined their derrire to the sound of Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires' Tiny Winey.

As patrons tried to catch their breaths and recover from the wild antics on-stage, selectors from the Sound Warriors sound system used the opportunity to inject some dancehall music into the carnival atmosphere, with tunes such as Sizzla's Can't Keep A Good Man Down, Buju's Driver A and Mavado's Don't Cry For Me.

The dancehall segment was continued by the 'Digicel Sound System' - a big truck laden with 'Supreme Ventures girls'.

At 2:00 a.m., as action restarted on the main stage, 12-year-old Shay Shay did a few covers from artistes such Beyonc and Akon, making way for Adrian, Miguel and Al, of One Third.

Deafening screams

The Digicel Rising Stars winners who took the stage to deafening screams from the audience, as they sang, Leave the Trees. Their medley continued with Welcome To Jamrock and their familiar dance moves, which triggered another round of deafening screams.

As One Third asked, "A weh di hard-working people dem a St. Thomas deh?" Having identified them they sang, 'Wi nah sucky ducky fi wear nuh name brand.'

Female patrons tumbled over each other as One Third threw posters into the crowd, while serenading them with You're Beautiful.

The vibes did not end with One Third's set on-stage, however, as patrons got wet and wild while throwing water on each other. And even after Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires completed their final set on-stage and left, patrons still remained, dancing up a storm until the early morning light beckoned them to go home.

This couple shows those around them just how to get a party going.
