Feanny saddles three winners
published: Sunday | April 1, 2007

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

FOURTEEN-TIME champion trainer Philip Feanny highlighted the pre-Guineas 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday with three winners, including hot favourite SECRET HIDEAWAY in 3-y-o maiden special for the Percival Martin Memorial Cup over the straight five course.

Feanny, a 'Hall of Fame' inductee, holder of the National Honour, Order of Distinction (OD), and winner of the coveted None Such award in 1993, also saddled the highly fancied RANKING to win the first race over 1200 metres for three-year-olds and 4-5 favourite BLUE MAGIC who made all impressively in the third race over 1100 metres, again for native bred three-year-olds.

windfall

As a result of thiswindfall, Feanny has moved up a place in the trainers' standings to hold down fourth with $3.2 million.

SECRET HIDEAWAY, ridden by Ian 'Dolly Baby' Spence, ran out an easy winner of the Percival Martin Memorial Cup, covering the distance in the smart time of 58.0.

Installed a howling 1-9 favourite in a field of nine, SECRET HIDEAWAY was bumped leaving the starting gates but recovered quickly in mid-track to chase the fleet-footed debutante PRINCESS LORNA (7-1) on to the main track, eventually going by a furlong out to beat her by four lengths, with LADY SILSILA third.

A bay gelding by Law Of The Sea out of the Star Attitude mare Zaza, SECRET HIDEAWAY, who won on what was his fourth outing, is owned by Ping Pong Stables and bred by Owen and Solomon Sharpe.

Later in the afternoon, RAINBOW TRAIN produced a devastating stretch run to win the Mortimer 'Morty' Heron Memorial Cup (claiming $240,000 - $210,000) by all of five lengths.

Installed a 6-5 favourite with Douglas Badaloo aboard, RAINBOW TRAIN was badly tailing off in the seven-strong as CRUISING ATTITUDE (9-5) enjoyed a clear lead into the straight lead, before RAINBOW TRAIN got into top gear. Finishing like a runaway train on the inner, he stormed through a furlong out to beat MAMBO (6-1) and NIJINSKY'S WAR (4-1) quite easily.

Bred by the Orange Valley Estates Limited, the 6-y-o mare by Pat N Jac out of Marlee Barley is trained and co-owned by Harry Parsard.

On a day when Florida-based Jamaican jockey Allen Maragh rode two winners in RANKING and BLUE MAGIC, the Anthony Nunes-trained CALABASH BAY (6-1) with apprentice Javour Simpson aboard, lowered the colours of bang-in-form 4-5 favourite MAJOR MAYER in the open allowance race over 1300 metres.

Bidding for his fourth consecutive win, MAJOR MAYER (Richie Mitchell up) led under pressure from CHADMAN before giving way to CALABASH BAY from early in the straight, eventually weakening into seventh place. Meanwhile, SCAT DADDY, running at odds of 2-1 with Edgar Prado riding for trainer Todd Pletcher, came through early in the straight to win the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park by 1 1/2 lengths from NATIONAL and CHEROKEE in a field of nine.

As a result of this windfall, Feanny has moved up a place in the trainers' standings to hold down fourth with $3.2 million.
