Portmore test for Reno
published: Wednesday | March 28, 2007

Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

END-OF-second-round winners Reno of Westmoreland will have another opportunity to test their championship credentials when they play away to Portmore United at Ferdie Neita Park today.

The Portmore United/Reno game is one of five on today. While not sharing top billing with that encounter, another which should generate a lot of interest is the Montego Bay derby between relegation-threatened Wadadadah and Seba United, who are just above that zone.

Also in action today are the determined Boys' Town, who host Naggo Head at Collie Smith Drive. While Naggo Head have played with courage, one suspects that Boys' Town will hand them another loss. August Town and Village United will have their third meeting in just over two weeks when they get together at Barbican. August Town have looked the better of the teams in those meetings and with Village losing more players to overseas engagements, things should be even tougher for them.

EXCITING ENCOUNTERS

Tivoli Gardens and Arnett Gardens have always had competitive and exciting encounters whether at one of the home grounds or at a neutral venue. This season has not been the easiest for Arnett Gardens who have hurdled one obstacle after another. At this point, they appear to be settling down but could suffer from the absence of Marcelino Blackburn and Kevin Wilson, both of whom have been suspended by their club for the remain Following an impressive run in the second round of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League which culminated in their end-of-round title, Reno have not found things to their liking in the third round. Already they have drawn twice and lost once in three games.

While Reno were slipping, Portmore United, who have played a game less, were making the most of their opportunities winning both matches of the round so far.

What makes Portmore so dangerous at this time is the form and attitude of the dangerous Onandi Lowe, who in his day, could decide a game almost by himself.

New coach Linval Dixon appears to be getting the best out of the former national player as well as other veterans such as Christopher Dawes. Kevin Deerr, Wolry Wolfe and the exciting Mario Swaby. If they could find a common purpose, then Reno could be in for a busy evening.
