The violence of KTHS students
published: Wednesday | March 28, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I SUPPORT your piece on indiscipline at Kingston Technical High School (KTHS)

In February of this year, I was on a visit to Jamaica and while visiting relatives in the Grant's Pen/Shortwood Road area, I was told of an incident the day before when a JUTC bus was stoned and badly damaged causing injuries to staff and passengers by students from KTHS. The older brother of one of the boys was so ashamed and visibly angered that he had to be cautioned against physically harming his younger brother. The child's mother, who appeared shortly after, also had to be consoled and warned about excessive physical abuse against the child.

When I read in a previous edition about the incident with the female teacher being assaulted, I thought about writing you then, but refrained, but on reading about the vice-principal's denial, I decided to share this piece with you. Hope he opens his eyes to what is really taking place at his school, and work to avert further incidents from taking place by using whatever power he has and stop burying his head in the sand.

I am, etc.,
