The Editor, Sir:Cricket, that game from which we take so much of our conduct of life. Cricket, the one beneficence of a colonial past has been changing but is now forever changed and the change took place in our homeland.
The death of Woolmer should bring home this change to many of us reared on the gentleness of a Saturday afternoon match between two sporting teams at one of our favourite ovals. The sport has climbed out of such innocence and gentlemanly conduct and is one more area of life where 'fixes' are arranged.
Can we still sing with the Calypsonian: Cricket, lovely cricket?" I am afraid that we who grew up in these pastoral environments where our passions about the game ran no higher than an after-match argument are now face to face with the demon that will make us wonder at future losing teams.
I am, etc.,
