SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine
Parents of students attending Christ Temple Basic School in Central Village, St. Catherine, deprived their children of classes yesterday when they padlocked the school gate and demanded the administration explain its firing of two teachers, despite an agreement linked to an increase in the school fee.
The more than 180 students were seen playing on the grounds of the school, seemingly unaware of what was taking place around them.
Grossly unacceptable
The angry parents wanted to know why the two teachers, who taught at the institution for more than eight years, had been given letters terminating their services, effective April 13.
"I find it grossly unacceptable that, having increased the school fee in September under the understanding that no teacher will be fired, this is now happening in the middle of the term, which must have a psychological effect on our children," said Nicola Lewis, a parent. The school fee has reportedly been increased from $6,000 to $9,500.
"Without an explanation, the school will remain close," Mrs. Lewis added.
She claimed that, despite the changes, the school had no Parents-Teachers' Association meeting to make those concerned aware of the dismissals. Among parents' concerns was an increase, from $330 to $430, for lunch each week. They also claimed that while other schools were selling nutri-bun for $30, Christ Temple sells it for $50.
When The Gleaner tried to speak with school principal, Evelyn Campbell, she only gave a terse response.
"I do not know what is happening besides the parents padlocking the gate. Why don't you go and speak with the parents?" she said.
