Legislative year ends tomorrow
published: Monday | March 26, 2007

The 2006/2007 parliamentary year will come to an end tomorrow with the prorogation of Parliament, giving way to the start of a new legislative year on Thursday, March 29.

Members of the Senate will host their colleagues from the Lower House on Thursday for the ceremonial opening of Parliament, with Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall delivering the throne speech outlining the Government's legislative programme for the new parliamentary year.

Thursday's ceremony is expected to be characterised by the usual pomp and pageantry that accompanies the event which will see both Prime Minister Simpson Miller and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding leading their parliamentary teams along Duke Street to Gordon House.

On that day, Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Omar Davies will table the Supplementary Estimates of Expenditure setting out the Capital and Recurrent expenditure of the Government for the 2007/2008 fiscal year.

The Standing Finance Committee of Parliament will examine the Estimates of Expenditure from April 3 - 5.

Dr. Davies will open the 2007/2008 Budget Debate on April 12 followed by his Opposition counterpart, Audley Shaw, who will make his presentation on April 17.

On April 19, the Opposition Leader will make his contribution to the debate to be followed by the Prime Minister on April 25. Dr. Davies will close the debate on April 26.
