Oliver on language
published: Sunday | March 18, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Recently, Oliver Samuels made a presentation at the Northern Caribbean University. His delivery encompassed the impact of language on his career over the years. In his presentation, Mr. Samuels humorously applauded the Jamaican dialect and highlighted the importance of learning and being a competent user of the English language. I was deeply overwhelmed by his presentation and for that hour and a half my Jamaican identity was reaffirmed. As he expressed his love for the country and the language, I felt honoured to be a Jamaican.

Although many deem it an insult to express themselves in Jamaican creole, Mr. Samuels sees it as an honour. It is this language that has greatly facilitated the creation of his own unique space on the global scene. Consequently, this has not only elevated him personally, but in many ways, the uniqueness of the country Jamaica itself! Mr. Samuels, keep up the good work!

I am, etc.,
