The Editor, Sir:Entertainers have lost the essence of their role when they continue to glamorise ganja and other drugs, especially when the majority of their fans are young, impressionable children.
Many lives have been destroyed and dreams dashed because of the irresponsibility of the artiste. Professionals who seek to educate and inform adolescents are met with snickering and disinterest, especially since the persons who use substances are revered.
We continue to belittle our teachers who work tirelessly but seemingly to no avail to get students ready for examinations, not recognising other external powerful forces.
State of ruin
The current economy is in a state of ruin, and blame is attributed to the politicians. What we seem to be missing in all of this is that music is powerful.
I am not taking the responsibilities away from the teacher or the politicians but, Mr. DJ, I say to you today, recognise that your words are powerful.
Too many promising students have not achieved their maximum potential because of substance abuse and misuse. I challenge you today, in your effort to entertain, positively educate. Jamaica can be transformed, your role is critical. Mr. DJ, raise your standards.
I am, etc.,
