FABIAN CAMPBELL won the men's category at the Jamaica Golf Association's (JGA) first tournament of its development series at Caymanas Golf and Country Club last weekend.Campbell won the section with a gross score of 145 and was elated to start the year on such a high note.

"I just want to get my game going early so I can have a good year," said Campbell after collecting his trophy.

Campbell, who shot a one-under 71 on the first day, was head and shoulders above the competition and looked poised to take the second round with similar ease despite strong finishes from Sean Morris (149) and Tommy Lee (152).

"I wanted to score at least two under par to send a message to the other guys, but it didn't end up that way", said Campbell at the end of the 36-hole tournament.

Other winners at the weekend included George Hugh, who took the men's Senior category with a score of 150, Dennis Atkinson who claimed the Super Senior category with 152 and Maggie Lyn, who walked away with the Ladies trophy. The JGA development series comprises 10 tournaments that award contestants Order of Merit points that contribute to their inclusion in the national squad. The next event on the calendar is scheduled for March 25.

Teams to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) to be held in the Dominican Republic in August will be selected based on Order of Merit and performances at the national trials.
