More moneyfor the mayor?
published: Thursday | February 22, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

AS MUCH as I admire Mayor Desmond McKenzie's tenacity, I wonder when he's going to realise that he will never get the millions of dollars he keeps asking for to cure the city's woes. In fact, I find it ridiculous some of the figures he's asking for.

Why on earth would it require $19 million to bush the May Pen cemetery when all you need is a work crew or some of those so-called 'hard labour' convicts with a dozen weed wackers and rakes, working consistently? Wasn't it just a year or so that millions were spent on the same location? Why was it allowed to return to such a deplorable state? Why does he constantly need millions of dollars to clean gullies when all he has to do is ensure that proper garbage disposal facilities are put in place and even more importantly, adequate garbage collection services are provided?

Look at the state of the Sandy Gully at Red Hills Road. Why were people allowed to create an informal community on the gully bank in clear view and no steps taken to prevent them?

Now that they have entrenched themselves, why have they not been provided with proper social services?

The Dunrobin Primary School is in close proximity to what is now a festering breeding ground for diseases. You mean not even World Cup Cricket can get this gully cleaned? Maybe they need to put another United States embassy on Red Hills Road.

I am, etc.,
