Let's do Trinidad

As I continue with the series of recommended places to eat in the various islands during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, I bring you Trinidad. But first, just a correction for Barbados - Apsara and Tamnak Thai Restaurant (Indian and Thai) and Italia Coffee House are on the South Coast and not East. Two good eateries left out - Brown Sugar Monday/Friday Bajan Lunch buffet, Chefette's Barbecue Barn (several locations).

With its historic Amerindian, Spanish, French, English, Portuguese, African, Indian, Chinese and the Middle East background, Trinidad's cuisine is a pot-pouri of deliciousness. From street food to fine dining, there's something for everyone. The Oval cricket ground is right in Port-of-Spain (the capital), so if you are on your way to, leaving, or not going to cricket at all, your mouth can be constantly peppered with delight. Tobago is one and a half hours by ferry, and bout 15 minutes by air. US$1=TT$6

IN AND AROUND PORT-OF-SPAIN

Breakfast on the road:

Doubles - two soft bakes filled with curried channa, extra pepper and curry mango. Found on street corners, my favourites are those outside Brooklyn Bar, Woodbrook. A husband and ex-wife team of sorts - different vans - same delight! US$.50

Breakfast and Lunch:

Breakfast Shed, Port-of-Spain. A variety of breakfast and lunch booths. Very local Creole. Charmaine is tops. Open Monday -Saturday 7:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. From US$2-US$6

Adam's, 15A Saddle Road, Maraval. Great Bagels, Toasted Pitta, Zatar Bread, Humus, Arepas, Kebabs, Sandwiches and Salads. Breakfast: 7:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. Lunch: 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday -Saturday. US$5 - US$40

Breakfast Buffet:

Hilton Hotel, Lady Young Road. Gazebo. Daily lunch buffet. Super breakfast buffet on Sundays highly recommended. Reservations required.

The Flambeau Restaurant, At the Courtyard by Marriott, Invaders Bay, Audrey Jeffers Highway: Superb breakfast. Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. US$19.

Day/Night: Hott Shoppe, Mucurapo Road and St. Clair. Open from 11:00 a.m. US$5 up.
