Location sought for Morant Bay RM
published: Wednesday | February 21, 2007

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Carol Palmer, along with the ministry's property management unit head, Major Warwick Stirling, yesterday met with Member of Parliament, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Mayor Joan Spencer and Custos Marcia Bennett, to identify a location for the sitting of the Morant Bay Resident Magistrate Court.

Michael Cohen, public relations officer in the ministry, said that a likely location, though modifications would be needed, was a section of the building that houses the National Works Agency.

However, the Chief Justice has not yet decided on a venue for Circuit Court sittings.

The courthouse, a St. Thomas landmark, was destroyed by fire on Monday.

Yesterday, as government officials visited the site, the fire department had to be called in to extinguish flames which were blazing under the rubble.
