The Editor, Sir:Upon reading the letter about the falling bridge in St. Mary, I too want to register my complaint about another bridge I observed while I was in the Island this last Christmas. I speak of a bridge that links Oracabessa and Jacks River situated at the entrance of Geddes Mountain.
As a child, I used that bridge reguarly and still do when I am home, but this last visit in December, I was startled by what I saw. The bridge is falling. I am not an engineer but it does not need one to see that 'death' is waiting to happen. The bridge is broken in the middle and at any time will fall. If you should approach the bridge from either end, you will not be able to see the middle because it has sunken too far for anyone to see unless you are on it. Even though the damage is that obvious, it is still being used by residents of the immediate area and beyond. I know that soon, if not yet, this will make the news, because a taxi loaded with passengers will fall in, or maybe a pedestrian.
I urge you to send a reporter to see and take pictures of this disaster waiting to happen. I think the citizens of St. Mary deserve better than this. I urge the councillor of the area who happens to be a batchmate of mine from high school, councillor Donald Sutherland, to act before some one dies.
I am, etc.,
