Lalor The building now occupied by the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS), on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), has been named in honour of its founder, renowned Jamaican scientist, Professor Gerald Lalor.
The building was recently named at a function on the Mona campus commemorating the professor's life long work.
During the function, Professor Lalor was hailed as one of Jamaica's finest scientists by his peers and former prime minister of Jamaica Edward Seaga, now turned research fellow at the university.
Professor Lalor founded the Centre for Nuclear Sciences in 1983, which later became ICENS, and was appointed its first director. ICENS is among the best facilities for inorganic analytical chemistry in the region and has helped through its nuclear reactor technology to identify poisonous elements in Jamaican soil. He also founded several other centres on the Mona campus including the UWI Distance Teaching Experiment and UWI Informatix.
In 1991 Professor Lalor became the Mona campus' second principal and stayed in that position until 1996. In 1990 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the Government.
