Falmouth rushing to save face
published: Tuesday | February 20, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

It is all well and good when I read in the paper about a J$11 million clean-up, road repair and beautification programme for the historic town of Falmouth. I say someone has just woken up and realized that the games is March 2007 and not 2008. I must thank the Chinese Government because if it were not for them, we would be looking for the lost stadium now.

Five weeks is not enough to clean and beautify the historic town based on the enormous work that needs to be done caused by years of neglect. For years now the citizens of Falmouth and its environs have been asking the council for a cleaner town. Today we are rushing to save our face because we elect people who do nothing but get pay.

In five weeks what can we really expect or achieve? The job will be a rush job, the quality and the effectiveness will not be there even if you are using a professional; corners will be cut and money will be paid out for little or no work in some areas. I would also like to ask: Will this job be treated like all the other beautification projects done before, that is, no continuation and no means of sustaining it? Is there a sustainable programme for this Falmouth programme because it would be a shame?

Mr. MP, Mr. Mayor and Mr. Councillor Wilkinson, you are all seeking to be re-elected. Why should we the electorate put you back? Look now, don't show us the hospital, the police station, the fire station, the three schools built, The North Coast Highway, the stadium, handing out of land titles, the Bounty Hall postal agency, the Duncans water scheme, The Harmony Cove development etc. These projects were there long before you all came into politics or were elected. Some had even started, you came and saw them in place, now tell us what have you done yourself since elected?

Walk good or come good, the electorate is listening and you can't fool them again.

I am, etc.,
