Digicel aims to double Guyana cellphone usage
published: Tuesday | February 20, 2007

Digicel Group has rolled out its new service in Guyana, and will be investing in a new network, brand and 'first-to-market' products, the company said on the weekend.

Its initial spend was US$60 million, the company said in a release.

Guyana with only 22 per cent mobile phone penetration represents for Digicel a chance to build new markets.

"We are delighted to be here in Guyana at last and are excited about the huge potential for growth that Guyana offers," said Digicel vice-chairman Leslie Buckley, speaking at the launch in Georgetown Friday.

"Our goal is that mobile penetration levels in Guyana will double in the not too distant future."

The cellular service provider has also opened 50 retail stores and is rolling out 6,000 recharge stations across the country.

Digicel Guyana, run by CEO Tim Bahrani, has a workforce of close to 200 employees.
